VKOC is proud to be an American Canoe Association (ACA) training facility, courses offered at VKOC follow best practices and training protocols designed by industry professionals in canoe, kayak, and paddleboard instructors.  

 

 

 

Level 1:  ACA Smart Start

 

The Smart Start Paddling Orientation: Kayak will expose participants to basic kayak safety and paddling skills.

Course Description

 

Pre-Launch

  • Parts of the boat & parts of the paddle
  • Proper way to hold a paddle              
  • How to board a kayak without going for a swim

 

On-Water Instruction - Principles of paddling

  • Strokes
    • Forward
    • Sweeps (forward / reverse)
    • Draw
    • Back
  • Maneuvers
    • Paddle in a straight line
    • Spin boat on center axis
    • Move boat laterally without forward direction
    • U-Turn (Wide arc)
    • Stop in reasonable distance

     

Kayak Class Fee Schedule:

 

Level 1 Orientation and Introduction Classes

 

Duration:        

2-3 1/2-Hours (Half Day)                

 

Class Size: 2-6 participants per instructor

 

Group Class:   $45 per participant

Private Class:  $65 per hour

 

Rental Kayak for class:

$20 half-day/$30 full-day

 

Level 1 and above (certification courses)

 

Duration:        

2-Half Days or 1-Full Day                

 

Class Size: 2-6 participants per instructor

 

Group Class:  

  • $90 per participant for 1-day class
  • $160 per participant for 2-day class

Private Class:  $65 per hour

 

Group Specialty Courses

  • Traditional Skills/Kayak Rolling   $75-$150
  • Stroke Clinic (Video taped)  $65
  • Rescues & Recoveries (non ACA) $45
